Giving priority to quality, they design basic knitted pieces that bring out their inherent appeal. They traditional approach to manufacturing, on a small scale and with local artisans, makes each piece really unique and timeless.

Francesca: Chi è l’anima creativa di KNITBRARY?

Yolanda: Sono io, Yolanda Estévez: fondatrice, direttore creativo e designer di KNITBRARY. Il brad ha sede a Coruña, in Spagna, e di recente abbiamo aperto il nostro laboratorio ad Arequipa, in Perù, dove realizziamo tutta la nostra produzione.

Francesca: Who is the creative mind behind KNITBRARY?

Yolanda: My name is Yolanda Estévez and I am founder, creative director and designer at KNITBRARY. The brand is based in Coruña, Spain, and we have recently opened our own workshop in Arequipa, Peru, where we make all our pieces.

Francesca: Quando e perché hai deciso di fondare il tuo marchio?

Yolanda: Dopo aver lavorato per molti anni come designer ho sentito il bisogno di creare qualcosa che fosse in sintonia con i miei valori e la mia personalità, ho avvertito la necessita di ritornare al lavoro artigianale e al fare con le mani prendendo così le distanze dall’industria e le sue regole.

Francesca: When did you decide to establish your brand and why?

Yolanda: After many years working as a designer I felt the need to create something in accord with my values and personality, to return to the artisanal work and true craftsmanship, and to distance myself from the prevailing ways of the industry.  

Francesca: Come descriveresti le tue creazioni?

Yolanda: KNITBRARY è un brand di maglieria d’alta moda, che non guarda alla stagionalità e che punta a recuperare il valore e l’unicità del lavoro a maglia. I nostri capi mettono in risalto la superba qualità dei filati che utilizziamo al punto che sono proprio le caratteristiche di ogni singolo filato a suggerire forme, volumi e design. Con le sue maglie dalla vestibilità classica, KNITBRARY è un brand senza eguali: sia per i modelli che realizza, sia per i colori che utilizza – sviluppiamo noi la cartella colori e tingiamo il filato – sia per la morbidezza dei materiali che impiega. Tutti i filati sono al 100% naturali, tutti tinti e lavorati a mano. Ogni pezzo è creato e numerato come parte di un’edizione rigorosamente limitata, e alcune creazioni sono addirittura uniche al mondo. Il tempo e la cura che dedichiamo alla realizzazione di ogni capo è ciò che rende speciale la storia di KNITBRARY, un brand che bisogna toccare e sentire per capire fino in fondo.

Francesca: How would you describe your clothes?

Yolanda: KNITBRARY is timeless knit couture that aims to the return to the knit as a unique piece. Our designs give prominence to the yarns’ superb natural quality and touch. Their characteristics suggest forms, volumes and designs. With an overall classical fit, KNITBRARY is unique in terms of patterns, colors (we develop all our colors and dye the yarn ourselves, too) and softness – all yarns are 100% natural, hand-dyed and hand-knitted. Each piece is created and numbered as a part of a strictly limited edition, and some are even unique in the world. The time and precision that are dedicated to each piece is what we believe tells its unique story. KNITBRARY must be touched and felt to be understood.

Francesca: Guardando al tuo lavoro potrei dire che etica ed estetica si fondono perfettamente in un unico prodotto. Come sei riuscita a ottenere questa sintesi?

Yolanda: Ciò che anima nel profondo KNITBRARY è il desiderio di conservare la bellissima arte peruviana del lavoro a maglia. Ammiriamo profondamente i molteplici talenti degli artigiani, i loro mestieri, la loro competenza e la loro dedizione. Crediamo che le loro mani lascino in ogni singolo capo un’impronta indelebile della loro conoscenza e delle loro emozioni e questo è ciò che rende il nostro prodotto veramente unico e autentico. KNITBRARY è la bellezza creata in modo altrettanto bello. Per noi, l’unico modo.

Francesca: Looking at your work, I might say that ethics and aesthetics perfectly merge into a single product. How did you achieve this result?

Yolanda: At the heart of KNITBRARY has always been the preservation of the beautiful Peruvian art of knitting. We deeply admire the artisans’ manifold talents and craft, their expertise and dedication. We believe their hands leave a lasting imprint of their knowledge and emotion on each piece and that is what makes each one truly unique and authentic. KNITBRARY is beauty created in a beautiful way. For us, the only way.

Francesca: I tessuti giocano un ruolo chiave nella progettazione, qual è il criterio con il quale li scegli?

Yolanda: Tutti i nostri filati sono naturali al 100% e sono di eccezionale qualità. Il nostro obiettivo principale è sempre stato quello di lavorare nei luoghi da cui provengono i materiali che utilizziamo e sempre di pari passo con gli artigiani locali. Il Perù è il Paese nel quale abbiamo fatto le migliori scoperte: Vicuña, Pima Cotton, Baby Alpaca e Alpaca Suri. Il nostro sogno è replicare questa esperienza in altri Stati, come la Mongolia, la Scozia …

Francesca: Fabrics play a key role too. Which is the criterion for choosing them?

Yolanda: All our yarns are 100% natural and have superb characteristics. Our main aim has always been to work in those places where the yarns come from, and always hand in hand with the local artisans. Peru is where we have encountered the best Vicuña, Pima Cotton, Baby Alpaca and Alpaca Suri to create our pieces. Our dream is to replicate our experience in other countries, such as Mongolia, Scotland…

Francesca: Parlando del futuro, che tipo di cambiamenti o nuove strategie e regole auspicheresti per il settore della moda?

Yolanda: Crediamo che parlare di moda, e di lusso in particolare, significhi parlare anche di responsabilità sociale e ambientale. C’è un legame imprescindibile tra loro. Per noi le cose belle devono essere fatte in modo bello. E ciò significa contare su artigiani locali e contribuire a preservare la loro cultura, preservando così le loro competenze non solo nel presente ma anche per il futuro. Il fattore tempo è determinante in questo processo. Il lavoro artigianale infatti richiede tempo e pazienza in ogni sua fase, deve essere apprezzato e rispettato ma soprattutto goduto. Prendendosi il tempo necessario, il capo durerà negli anni e invecchierà magnificamente.

Francesca: Talking about the future, what sort of changes or new ways and rules would you make in the fashion industry?

Yolanda: We believe that when talking about fashion, and luxury in particular, it cannot be separated any longer from social and environmental responsibility. For us, beauty must be created in a beautiful way. In our case that means to count on local artisans and to help preserve their culture by maintaining their skills relevant today and for the future. Time might be the most important factor in this. Artisanal work requires time and patience in every step and phase, and it must be valued and respected, but above all enjoyed. When the necessary time is taken, the piece will last in time and age beautifully.
