Quando devo condividere le cose che scopro e che mi piacciono di più, mi rendo conto che tutte le mie storie preferite sono accomunate dal fatto di trasmettere lo stesso senso di forza e di sfida. Brit Wacher offre una visione inaspettatamente contemporanea della moda celebrandola con la sua filosofia olistica come mi ha raccontato in questa intervista  Brittany Wacher la designer e direttrice creativa canadese di questo brand di Toronto.

I don’t know quite where to begin in terms of sharing my highlights, but I do know that all my favorite stories are united by the fact that they convey a sense of strength and defiance. Brit Wacher offers an unexpectedly contemporary vision that celebrates a holistic fashion philosophy. I had the chance to get into an interesting conversation with Toronto-based creative director and designer Brittany Wacher. 

Francesca: Partendo dall’inizio, vorrei chiederti come sei approdata alla moda e perché hai deciso di fondare il tuo marchio?

Brittany: Adoro l’idea di creare forme e oggetti che si possono indossare e che possono dare un senso di sicurezza, una sorta di armatura dentro la quale trovare riparo durante la giornata. Una forma di emancipazione femminile per un moderno Rinascimento. Sicuramente mia nonna, che quando ero bambina ha creato tanti vestiti per me, ha avuto una grande influenza sul mio stile. Guardarla mentre era all’opera è stato per me assolutamente affascinante. Avrebbe voluto vestirmi come una principessa e invece io montavo a cavallo, su e giù per la fattoria, come un ragazzino a cui piaceva fare i rodei. E in sella alle moto da fuoristrada guidavo lungo il torrente per poi tornare a casa giusto in tempo per il saggio di pianoforte. Curioso che fin da piccola io sia stata capace di esprimere liberamente forze così contraddittorie. Dopo la scuola mi sono formata con Pauline Van Dongen, che ha letteralmente riversato le sue conoscenze tecniche su di me. Le sarò per sempre grata per questo. Una donna capace di innovazione, concentrazione e metodo. Ritengo una gran fortuna essere dove la vita mi ha portata.

Francesca: Starting at the beginning, I’d like to ask you how did you come to fashion and why did you decide to establish your brand?

Brittany: I love the idea of creating shapes and wearable objects, furthermore to add a sense of security or armor to transport one through the day. It comes in the form of female empowerment for modern day renaissance wo(man). My grandmother made a lot of my clothes when I was a child. I think that this had a  big influence on my style at the very least. Watching her construct these creations was totally fascinating to me. She would make me frilly, princess dresses, whilst I was running around the farm on horseback, a rodeo kid taking bikes down the creek and back home in time for a piano recital. Very curious, very dedicated from a young age to liberating expression within contradictory forces. After school I trained under Pauline Van Dongen, who shed her technical skills upon me. I am forever grateful. A woman of innovation, focus, and articulated process. I have been so lucky in my life to bring me to where I am today.

Francesca: Con un sottile approccio al misticismo e alla fantasia, fornisci un’alternativa che ben si sposa con l’idea di un moderno Rinascimento. Potrei definire i tuoi abiti audaci, vicini allo spirito avant-garde e con una certa inclinazione alla ribellione. E’ stato così fin dall’inizio?

Brittany: Sì, certo. Viviamo in un mondo in cui le decisioni vengono prese per noi e le nostre voci a volte non vengono ascoltate, tuttavia abbiamo la possibilità di vivere esprimendoci con forza, specie grazie al modo in cui ci presentiamo. Ho scoperto che la moda mi avrebbe dato l’opportunità di condividere tutto questo. Sono sempre stata caparbia rispetto a quello che sono e che rappresento, rispetto a quello che è importante per me e per le persone vicino a me. Non sempre è facile ammettere che questo è il mio modo di essere e non è facile nemmeno dire che mi fa stare bene essere così, vulnerabile e forte, cercando di prendere posizione tra questi due estremi.

Francesca: By a subtle approach to mysticism and fantasy, you provide a suitable alternative for the modern day renaissance wo(man). I might say bold and daring clothes nod to avant-garde spirit, with a rebellious new attitude. Did that articulate itself from the beginning?

Brittany: Yes, for sure. We live in a world where decisions are made for us, our voices are sometimes not heard, yet we have the choice to live loud in expression – the way we present ourselves. I found that creating fashion would give me the opportunity to share this. I have always been stubborn about who I am and what I stand for, what is important to me and those close to me. It is not always so easy to say this is how I am and I am totally okay with it, in vulnerability and strength. Taking a stand.

Francesca: Un brand che, parlando di moda alle donne, le stimola a fare scelte personali piuttosto che a seguire le infinite tendenze che arrivano direttamente dalla passerella. Me ne puoi parlare?

Brittany: Voglio che le donne si sentano emancipate, come se fossero in grado di fare qualsiasi cosa. Creo questi abiti per persone che affrontano la vita senza sentirsi sempre necessariamente all’altezza. Penso che la vita sia dura e che i vizi “sani” possano aiutare a superare la giornata. La donna, come una dea, dovrebbe essere celebrata ogni giorno. Sento che questo è il mio scopo, imprimere a ogni storia un segno di forza. È così bello vestire le donne. Desidero offrire un reale valore al mio pubblico e alle mie clienti creando dall’essenza e dallo spirito per l’essenza e lo spirito altrui. Come dire: spegni la luce e abbraccia l’oscurità, sii te stesso e sforzati di raggiungere il tuo Sé più profondo. Creare è una vera e propria esperienza, e l’esperienza di indossare un capo può contribuire alla propria emancipazione, soprattutto quando la mente, lo spirito e il corpo sono perfettamente allineati. Quando ci sentiamo bene e ci sentiamo forti sono tantissime le cose che possiamo realizzare, tanto come singoli individui quanto come gruppo. La moda si basa molto sull’estetica e io voglio enfatizzare lo spirito e l’energia che una creazione può apportare nella vita di ciascuno. E’ come comprare un quadro per la propria casa, solo che un vestito lo indossi, lo vivi,  vive a contatto con la tua pelle, è qualcosa di intimo.

Francesca: A brand that talks to women about fashion in a way that actually helps them make personal choices rather than just endless dictating trends straight from the catwalk. Can you talk about that?

Brittany: I want them to feel empowered, like they can do anything. I create these clothes for people to wear to get from A to B, when you don’t necessarily feel up to the commute of life. Life is hard and we must have healthy vices to get through the day. The woman, the goddess should be celebrated each and every day. I feel like this is my purpose, to complement each story with a token of strength. It is so lovely and beautiful to dress women. I want to empower and offer true value for my audience and customer by creating from essence and spirit for others essence and spirit. Shed the light and embrace the darkness. Be who you are and strive towards your higher self. It is maybe even more so about creating an experience…as it is an experience to wear something that aids self-empowerment. You can achieve the things you are most set out to do if your mind, spirit, and physical body are in total alignment. It is sometimes not so important how we look, but rather how we feel. As an individual and human collective. The things we can accomplish if we are feeling well, strong and clear minded. Fashion is very much based on aesthetic and I want to emphasize on the spirit and energy that a creation can bring into ones life, in comparison to how and individual would purchase a painting for their home, but now they are wearing it, living in it, it is touching their skin, their drinks and food are splashing on it. It is intimate.

Francesca: puoi raccontarmi come si sviluppa il tuo processo creativo? Cosa ti ispira di più?

Brittany: Mi piace stare in mezzo alla natura. Guardarla e sentirmi parte di qualcosa di semplice, vasto e maestoso, mi piace godere della sua tranquillità. Disegno e creo i miei personaggi immaginandoli mentre si avventurano nella vita: sono guerrieri, malvagi e creature ultraterrene. Questi personaggi hanno ruoli, cuori e prospettive che danno forma ai dettagli. Le sfumature delle emozioni dettano i colori, le forme e la composizione.

Francesca: Can you tell me more about your process of working? What inspires you the most?

Brittany: I love taking adventures into nature. To watch and be a part of something simple, vast, and majestic. To be quiet with nature. I draw and create characters that come to me while venturing life, warriors, villains and otherworldy creatures. These characters have roles, hearts, and perspective that inform the details of the designs. Nuance of emotion  dictate the colours, shapes, and composition.

Francesca: Come scegli i tuoi tessuti?

Brittany: La mia scelta ricade su tessuti sostenibili e prediligo sempre una bella fibra naturale. La mano di un tessuto, il drappeggio, la sensazione che restituisce: non c’è altro criterio di scelta per me. Recentemente sto scoprendo i metodi che si avvalgono della combinazione di scienza e tecnologia per lo sviluppo tessile e i benefici che ne possono derivare. Si tratta di un approccio olistico che attraverso la tecnologia ci avvicina di nuovo alla natura.

Francesca: How do you choose your fabrics?

Brittany: I choose sustainable fabric options and my first preference will always be a beautiful natural fiber. The touch, the drape, the feel. There’s no other way for me.
Recently I am discovering methods and resources that come in the form of combining science and technology in to the development of textile that can give much greater benefit. It is holistic. Utilizing technology to take us back closer to nature.

Francesca: Parlando della tua ultima collezione SS/19 “IN EQUILIBRIO” dici che si basa sul concetto di utilizzare la forza interiore e la concentrazione per raggiungere l’equilibrio in questo universo dualistico. Con l’obiettivo di ispirare gli altri a prendere in considerazione l’equilibrio in tutto ciò che facciamo come esseri umani, sia all’interno di una comunità che come parti integranti del pianeta, hai realizzato abiti di una morbidezza seducente che allude alla vulnerabilità ma che svela al contempo una forza inaspettata. Cos’è l’equilibrio per te? 

Brittany: Mi ha profondamente colpita pensare a quanto un cambiamento attuato dentro di noi possa essere importante. Pensare che quel cambiamento può contribuire al benessere del pianeta è davvero incoraggiante, umiliante e anche molto stimolante

Francesca: Talking about your last collection SS/19 “IN BALANCE” you say it’s based upon the concept of utilizing inner strength and focus to achieve balance in this dualistic universe. With the aim of inspiring others to consider balance in everything we do as a human, a community, a planet you have created a seductive softness that hints at vulnerability, while offering unexpected strength. I was wondering if you could elaborate a little bit on the notion of balance. 

Brittany: I was very moved by the idea that making change within yourself is very much that, that will help the planet, it’s encouraging, humbling, and very motivating.

Francesca: C’è qualche progetto che sogni e che non hai ancora realizzato?

Brittany: Vestiti che possano essere indossati nello spazio, o nell’Alfa Centauri (sistema stella triplo situato nella costellazione australe del Centauro ndr) chissà…

Francesca: Do you have any dream projects you haven’t been able to realize?

Brittany: Clothes for outer space, Alpha Centauri, perhaps…
