Francesca Interlenghi: Come è iniziato il tuo rapporto con la moda?
Elisavet Kapogianni: Fin dalla tenera età sono stata affascinata dal magico modo in cui il tessuto può trasformarsi da semplice materiale tridimensionale a oggetto tridimensionale e dalle infinite forme che può assumere. Ho sempre amato creare vestiti e oggetti utilizzando qualsiasi cosa, dai ritagli di carta agli imballaggi scartati. Durante gli anni della tarda adolescenza ho maturato l’idea di fare la designer, quindi alla fine degli anni Novanta ho lasciato la Grecia per assecondare i miei interessi e formarmi nel Regno Unito. Ho studiato Fashion Design e ho conseguito una laurea con lode presso il dipartimento Art & Design dell’Università di Derby. Ho studiato 4 anni, incluso un anno di esperienza lavorativa a Londra che era un prerequisito per finire e ottenere la laurea. Ho appreso e sperimentato i fondamentali del design della moda in un ambiente stimolante, ispirata e influenzata intellettualmente dai miei validissimi docenti: tutto ciò ha contribuito a far evolvere il mio pensiero e la mia tecnica in un contesto di massima libertà espressiva e creatività.
Francesca Interlenghi: How did you come to fashion?
Elisavet Kapogianni: At a very early age I was fascinated by the magical way fabric can transform from almost one dimensional material to a 3 dimensional object and the endless forms it can take. I also enjoyed to make clothing and objects out of any material available to me, from scraps of paper to discarded packaging. In my late teens I decided to be a fashion designer, so in the late nineties I left Greece to explore my curiosities, be educated and be inspired in the UK. I studied Fashion Design and obtained a BA (honors) degree from the Art & Design department, at the University of Derby in the UK. I studied 4 years, including one year of work placement experience in London, which was a prerequisite to finish and get my degree. I learned of and experimented with the fundamentals of fashion design practice, within an up to date environment. I was inspired and influenced by intellectual material from my very ingenious lecturers and state of the art library which advance my thinking and practice. Although, it had structured courses in fashion practice, I had the outmost creative freedom to explore ideas and techniques.
Francesca: Che tipo di formazione hai avuto nel campo della moda?
Ho conseguito la laurea nel 2002 dopo aver completato la mia tesi sul tema delle felpe nel Nord e Sud America e in quell’anno ho presentato la mia prima collezione a Londra durante la settimana della moda dedicata alle scuole. La collezione intitolata “Urban Pods” era composta di gabbie sartoriali e strutturate che si intersecavano con forme fluide allo scopo di indagare i limiti della libertà e del confinamento all’interno del dibattito sulla femminilità. L’irrequieto Regno Unito tra la fine degli anni Novanta e l’inizio degli anni Duemila era pervaso da filosofie e pratiche culturali diverse e affascinanti. Importante per me è stato lo scenario dei club in forte espansione e le diverse correnti subculturali. Ricordo quel periodo come il più audace, stimolante e creativo della mia vita, perché ha plasmato il modo in cui penso e in cui approccio il mio lavoro di designer e credo che lo porterò avanti e lo svilupperò per tutto il resto della mia vita.
Francesca: What kind of training did you have?
Elisavet: I graduated in 2002 after having complete my written thesis on fashion sweatshops in North and South America and showcased my first collection in graduate fashion week in London. The collection titled ”Urban Pods” were structured sartorial cages with intersecting fluid forms exploring the limits of freedom and confinement within the traditional dialogue on femininity. Generally living in the restless UK of the late nineties/early 2000s, I was saturated with the diverse, fascinating cultural philosophies and practices. I was energized by the booming club scene and diverse subcultural styles. I recall those years as one of the most daring, inspiring and creative years of my life, that shaped the way I think and practice as a designer and will carry and always develop for the rest of my life.
Francesca: Quando hai deciso di fondare il tuo marchio e perché?
Elisavet: Il mio ingresso nell’industria della moda è avvenuto a Londra lavorando come stagista per il brand sperimentale Vexed Generation che mi ha coinvolto in progetti e mostre interdisciplinari e all’avanguardia. Dopo di che sono ritornata in Grecia e ho subito iniziato a lavorare per uno dei principali marchi streetwear di Atene, dove sono rimasta per sette anni. Forte dell’esperienza nel settore, ho deciso di seguire il mio percorso personale e ho fondato il mio marchio dandogli il mio nome. Volevo seguire la mia strada e creare un marchio con un approccio più sofisticato e sperimentale alla moda. Inoltre, volevo godermi la libertà di lavorare potendo gestire in autonomia il mio tempo.
Francesca: When did you decide to establish your brand and why?
I got into the fashion industry while in London with the experimental brand Vexed Generation where I worked as a design intern and got involved in the brands edgy cross-disciplinary projects and exhibitions. After graduating I returned to Greece and immediately started working for one of the leading streetwear Athens-based brand, where I worked as a designer for 7 years. Armed with the industry’s experience I decided to follow my personal path and founded my own brand under my name. I reached a threshold when I wanted to revisit my own explorations and pursue my ideas in my own terms and devices, aiming to create a brand with a more sophisticated and experimental approach to fashion. In addition I wanted to indulge into my own explorations and enjoy the freedom of working and thinking in my own time management.
Francesca: Come descriveresti il tuo approccio alla moda e lo spirito del marchio?
Elisavet: Elisavet Kapogianni si rivolge a coloro che ambiscono, anche attraverso il vestire, a una versione migliore di sé stessi sfidando le regole della moda e avendo fiducia nei cambiamenti lenti. Capi essenziali, durevoli e di alta qualità con un tocco concettuale e versatili nello stile: un equilibrio tra utilità, etica ed estetica. L’estetica gioca sulla fusione di drappeggi strutturati e finiture sartoriali, favorisce il comfort rispetto al decorativismo, si avvale di tessuti pregiati e trascende i limiti imposti dalla taglia. Il risultato è una silhouette rilassata che può essere arricchita da accessori che ne evidenziano la femminilità senza scadere mai nel provocatorio. Le collezioni riflettono una raffinatezza dinamica e senza tempo che, rivisitando forme classiche, esaltano eleganza e indossabilità dei capi. Francesca: How would you describe your approach to fashion and the spirit of the brand?
Elisavet: Elisavet Kapogianni aspires to be a designation for those in pursuit of a better version of themselves by defying norms and having faith in unrushed change. Crafting pared-down, enduring, high quality garments with conceptual edge and versatility in styling, Elisavet Kapogianni seeks to strike a balance among utility, ethics and aesthetics. Fusing structured drapery and tailoring finishes in each garment, favoring comfort over decoration, using fine enduring fabrics and blurring the boundaries of size fit, results in relaxed silhouettes that can be accessorized to highlight femininity without being provocative. Francesca: Fedele alla tua filosofia, l’ultima collezione “Wonderland” gioca con volumi, forme, asimmetrie e sovrapposizioni. Qual è il concetto sottostante?
Elisavet: La collezione WONDERLAND AI 19/20 si ispira al racconto di Lewis Carroll “Alice nel paese delle meraviglie”: un paesaggio inconsueto e onirico dentro il quale si muove una donna contemporanea, intelligente e decisa, priva di paura e avventurosa. La collezione è composta da pezzi che sembrano quasi azzardi sartoriali, oggetti da indossare liberamente e giocosamente, da esplorare nelle proporzioni, nei volumi e negli strati così da creare il proprio stile personale. Si tratta di una meravigliosa trasformazione visiva e del modo magico in cui un tessuto o un indumento possono darle corpo. Capi con drappeggi strutturati o forme su misura possono essere sovrapposti ripetutamente travalicando così i confini della forma e creando silhouette scultoree. Sono forme geometriche semplici che, drappeggiate e accessoriate, creano volumi fluidi e solidi allo stesso tempo e uno spazio in cui muoversi liberamente. Per la collezione Wonderland ho anche tratto ispirazione dalle architetture di artisti del calibro di Zaha Hadid, Frank Lloyd Wright e Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, per il modo in cui approcciano la forma e il modo in cui forme morbide e robuste si fondono le une nelle altre e nel loro ambiente. La campagna WONDERLAND si compone di una serie di opere audiovisive, create in collaborazione con l’artista greco Vasilis Karouk, attraverso le quali esprimo in modo creativo e con senso dell’umorismo i valori e l’estetica del mio brand.
Francesca: In accordance with your work, your latest collection “Wonderland” plays with volumes, shapes, asymmetries and overlaps. Which is the concept behind it?
Elisavet: WONDERLAND AW 19/20, inspired by the classic tale Alice’s adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, is a strange and dreamy landscape in which the contemporary, intelligent and decisive woman moves, finding herself fearless and adventurous. WONDERLAND collection is comprised of pieces that are set out to inspire sartorial adventures, items that you can wear freely and playfully, explore proportion, volume and layering so as to create your personal style. It is about a wondrous visual transformation and the magical way a fabric or garment can be adapt to it. Garments with structured drapery or tailored shapes that can be layered and overlapped so their boundaries of shape are blurred, creating sculptural silhouettes. Garments with simple geometrical shapes that can be draped and accessorized, creating volumes that appear melting and sturdy at the same time, organically draping, creating space that you can move freely into. For the Wonderland collection I drew also inspiration from organic architecture of the likes of Zaha Hadid, Frank Lloyd Wright and Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, the way they approach form and the way soft vs sturdy shapes melt into each other and their environment. WONDERLAND campaign, is a series of audiovisual artwork created in collaboration with Greek artist Vasilis Karouk , through which we can talk creatively and with a sense of humor for the values and aesthetics of my brand.
