Maciej Von Biberstein (b. Wroclaw, Poland, 1966; currently lives and works in Hamburg, Germany) is a painter, a photographer and a performer. After attending the Medical Academy in Wroclaw, Poland, in 1997 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts studying with great masters such as Konrad Jarodzki, Roman Kowalik and Jan Jaromir Aleksiun.
In his paintings Biberstein gives life to women who are strong, lustful and conscious of their power. He believes in the myth of Eternal Femininity, a myth that was even refuted by Simone de Beauvoir in her worldwide known book “The Second Sex”. For painters, womanhood is almost always causative might demonic and dangerous, yet an origin of everything which is beautiful in life. Biberstein drawings of Venuses have a great similarity to prehistoric goddesses. On paintings we can see trembling spots of color and dynamic sights. Sometimes he grabs a tube of paint and just marks outlines. On the picture of The Warrior, which came into existence accordingly to documental about Asian female wrestling, we can see a thick stream of red dye, flowing by a female thigh. Erected swollen breasts, round bellies and vaginas are just some of the strong elements Biberstein uses in his paintings. He takes away individual attribute and reduces shapes with the aim to create marks of femininity, the object of his worship.
He states:
Suffering and mutilation comes with triumph of conquering death and ruling the whole world. It’s the woman who rules the world. We must remember that.
Over the years he has become more and more interested in photography, developing a recognizable stylistic code that favors the use of black and white and the resulting clear light.
