Patrick Morarescu è un fotografo e artista visivo tedesco che vive e lavora tra Berlino e Maiorca. Le sue opere sono originali e provocatorie perché mettono instancabilmente in discussione i confini tra il corpo umano e il mondo circostante. La sua ricerca, audace e mai scontata, lo induce a sperimentare di continuo offrendoci porzioni di un mondo colto da prospettive altre. Il suo ultimo progetto, la serie fotografica “The Sun Will Shine Again Tomorrow”, scattata durante la pandemia, è stata l’occasione per approfondire il suo lavoro.
Patrick Morarescu is a German photographer and visual artist who lives and works between Berlin and Mallorca. His creations refresh and provoke, tirelessly questioning boundaries between the human body and the world around it. He never tires of experimenting to create situations in which we may see the world from a different perspective. In so doing, the boldness of his research is never monotonous. I took the occasion of the latest photography series he shot during the pandemic – entitled “The Sun Will Shine Again Tomorrow” – to delve into his work.
Il pellegrinaggio fotografico, fisico e mentale, di Morarescu nell’universo dei luoghi immersi dentro la solitudine della pandemia, si sviluppa nella dualità tra la registrazione del reale e la rivelazione del fantastico. Le sue fotografie diventano atti di scoperta e di riappropriazione del presente, dei luoghi in cui l’enigma della vita sociale e urbana è stato travolto dal flusso dell’immobilità. Il risultato è un diario per immagini, quasi una ghost story raccontata attraverso scatti di cose semplici, cose comuni sottratte all’artificio estetico: un edificio verde, un uomo con il suo cane, una piscina, un parco giochi, uno scorcio di mare in lontananza. Eppure, nonostante l’armonia della composizione e l’uso sapiente della luce, l’effetto percettivo è indubbiamente spiazzante perché ogni elemento sembra come avvolto da un alone di mistero e innafferrabilità. Il fermo immagine cristallizza la poesia rarefatta dell’assenza e tende a rivelare il non manifesto delle cose e dei fatti: il palcoscenico di un teatro muto in cui solo l’autore si muove.
Morarescu’s photographic physical and mental pilgrimage in the universe of places immersed in the solitude of the pandemic, develops in the duality between the recording of the real and the revelation of the fantastic. His photographs become acts of discovery and re-appropriation of the present, of the places where the enigma of social and urban life has been overwhelmed by the flow of stillness.The result is a diary made of images, almost a ghost story told through shots of simple, common things removed from aesthetic artifice: a green building, a man with his dog, a swimming pool, a playground, a glimpse of the sea in distance. Yet, despite the harmony of the composition and the skilful use of light, the perceptual effect is undoubtedly unsettling because each element seems to be enveloped in an aura of mystery and elusiveness. The still image crystallizes the rarefied poetry of absence and tends to reveal the unmanifest of things and facts: the stage of a silent theatre in which only the author moves.
“La serie è stata scattata durante la pandemia principalmente nei luoghi di maggior affluenza turistica di Magaluf, Playa de Palma e Palmanova; posti che non ho quasi mai visitato da quando vivo a Maiorca. I vari lockdown hanno fatto si che questi luoghi, fino ad allora inesistenti, producessero i loro effetti su di me in pace. Ho scoperto un mondo fantastico, pieno di monumenti la cui patina e poesia mi affascinavano sempre di più. Così sono ripetutamente tornato a quei paesaggi urbani abbandonati, in cui l’uomo e l’architettura erano diventati estranei l’uno all’altra. The Sun Will Shine Again Tomorrow è una pausa, come la pausa che intercorre tra inspirazione ed espirazione.”
“The series was created during the pandemic mostly in the tourism hotspots of Magaluf, Playa de Palma and Palmanova; places I hardly ever visited since living in Mallorca. The lockdowns gave me the opportunity to let these for me unreal places work on me in peace. I found a fantastic world full of monuments whose patina and poetry captivated me more and more. Again and again I returned to the abandoned urban landscapes, where man and architecture have become strangers to each other. The Sun Will Shine Again Tomorrow is a pause, like the pause between inhaling and exhaling.”
E’ proprio nello spazio di mezzo, quello che separa il momento dell’inspirazione dall’espirazione, che prendono forma le immagini fotografiche di Morarescu. Negli interstizi del quotidiano la luce del sole, illuminando forme e figure, realizza un racconto poetico e magico del presente assoluto. Perché la fotografia è presente assoluto, è testimonianza di un tempo e di una realtà. Ma racchiude in sé stessa anche qualcosa di intoccabile: il dialogo infinito, perché senza parole, tra l’esteriorità dell’osservato e l’interiorità dell’osservatore. Un paradiso perduto sul quale domani brillerà ancora il sole.
It is in the space between, the one that separates the moment of inspiration from the exhalation, that Morarescu’s photographic images take shape. The sunlight, illuminating shapes and figures in the interstices of everyday life, creates a poetic and magical tale of the absolute present. Since photography is an absolute present, it is a testimony of a time and a reality. But it also encompasses something untouchable: the infinite dialogue, without words, between the exteriority of the observed and the interiority of the observer. A lost paradise on which the sun will shine again tomorrow.
