Abiti come un incantesimo, la funzione magica e dimenticata di un vestire capace di regalare agli oggetti antichi nuova vita. La designer russa Elena Tash ha appena debuttato con la prima capsule collection realizzata per il suo nuovo brand Onsitsa e di questo e di moda, tradizioni, favole e sogni abbiamo parlato nella nostra intervista.

The clothes created by the Russian fashion designer Elena Tash are like a spell that has the magical and archaic function of giving new life to ancient objects. Following her debut under the name of Onsitsa, I had the pleasure of talking to the talented Elena on fashion, traditions, fairy tales and dreams.

Francesca Interlenghi: Partiamo dall’inizio. Come sei arrivata alla moda e perché hai deciso di creare il tuo marchio?

Elena Tash: Le radici del mio amore per la moda sono profondamente legate alla mia infanzia. Trascorrevo molto tempo a costruire diversi tipi di forme con la plastilina, la carta e tutti gli altri tipi di materiali. Ricordo quando ricoprivo ogni superficie con i miei oggetti d’arte e quanto mi rendeva felice creare nuovi mondi. L’amore per le trame e le forme mi ha accompagnato per tutta la mia vita e un giorno ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare il mio insegnante Ilya Varegin, fondatore del marchio “Infundibulum”. A quel tempo ero un’ illustratrice di libri, avevo il mio negozio e mi interessavo agli autori cinesi, ma sapevo per certo di voler creare abiti e di voler iniziare il più presto possibile. Così ho chiuso quell’ attività e mi sono tuffata in un territorio fino a quel momento inesplorato ma prevedibile.

Francesca Interlenghi: I’d like to start at the beginning. How did you come to fashion and why did you decide to establish your own brand?

Elena Tash: The roots of my love for fashion are deeply tied to my childhood. I used to spend a lot of time creating different kinds of shapes by using plasticine, paper and basically all other kinds of material. I remember when I was covering every surface with my pieces of art and how happy I was while creating a new world for myself. I have been carrying my love for textures and shapes through my life and one day I was just lucky enough to meet my teacher Ilya Varegin, owner of his brand Infundibulum. At that time I was a qualified book illustrator and had my own store featuring authentic Chinese authors, but I knew I wanted to create clothes by myself and I needed to start as soon as possible. That’s why I decided to close my store and dove deep into an uncharted but so expected territory.

Francesca: Fuggire norme e convenzioni per dare vita a una nuova estetica femminile: sembra essere questo lo scopo principale del tuo lavoro. Lo avevi chiaro fin dall’inizio?

Elena: All’inizio ho optato per un certo tipo di estetica dimenticata, quella del costume russo intriso di vecchie tradizioni e l’ho mescolata con il mio senso del bello e i miei sogni, dandogli nuova vita. Per me è una sfida entusiasmante creare un mondo in cui vecchio e nuovo si possono incontrare. Mi piace guardare alle cose interessanti del passato – forme, storie, dipinti, film, progetti fotografici – e combinarle con elementi moderni. Il mio obiettivo è mostrare alla mia generazione come potrebbe essere il costume se tenessimo in considerazione le nostre tradizioni.

Francesca: Escaping the conventions and norms to rebuild woman’s new aesthetics seems to be the main purpose of your work. Did you articulate that from the beginning?

Elena: Since the beginning, I especially focused on a kind of forgotten aesthetics, including Russian costume and old traditions and I mixed it with my sense of beauty and my dreams, aiming to bring it to new life. For me it’s an exciting challenge to create a world where I can blend old and new by taking inspiration from interesting historical shapes, stories, paintings, movies, photo projects and combining them with modern elements. My goal is to show our generation how the costume might be if only we’d pay greater attention to our traditions.

Francesca: Una cosa che mi attrae così tanto di questa tua prima collezione è il fatto che tu non abbia avuto paura di abbracciare la forza delle tue idee, anche a costo di risultare non convenzionale. La tua sembra essere un’icona perfettamente imperfetta di forza e complessa femminilità in cui oscurità e luce coesistono fianco a fianco. Su quali fondamenta si basa il tuo progetto?

Elena: Dietro il mio progetto c’è il percorso di ogni donna che è alla ricerca della propria natura e della propria forza e di tutte le donne che quella forza l’hanno già trovata. Un percorso in cui si può essere chiunque e ovunque. Questo il pensiero che sostiene il mio brand Onsitsa, parola che in russo antico significa Qualcuno. Credo che ognuno di noi possa trovare la propria forza nella propria imperfezione e quando ciò accade può essere davvero un’esperienza bella e potente.

Francesca: One thing that is so attractive to me about your first collection is the idea of being unafraid to embrace your own power, even at the expense of being unconventional. Yours seems to be a perfectly imperfect icon of strength and complex womanhood, where darkness and light exist side-by-side. Can you tell me more about the concept behind your project?

Elena: Behind my project there is every woman who wants to follow her path and look for her nature and power and there are all the women who have already found their own. I aim to point to a path for being anyone and everywhere. This is the idea behind the name I chose for my project: Onsitsa means Someone in Old Russian. I believe that each of us can find their own strength in their imperfection and it can be such a beautiful and powerful experience.

Francesca: Non posso fare a meno di sentire che le tue silhouette drammatiche e concettuali funzionano quasi come uno scudo di resilienza nel mondo accelerato dei mega brand globali. Come descriveresti il tuo approccio alla moda? E cosa stai cercando di esprimere?

Elena: Faccio una distinzione tra i piccoli brand locali e i mega brand perché sono due realtà che hanno significati completamente diversi. Penso che ci sia più amore e verità nei piccoli progetti locali perché, semplicemente, è possibile verificare l’autenticità di ogni singolo elemento del vestire e perché chi vuole sapere di più sul marchio può instaurare un dialogo diretto con il designer. Condurre un piccolo progetto indipendente è come creare un proprio mondo in cui si possono rendere le persone più felici e si può dare loro un po’ più di forza attraverso gli abiti.

Francesca: I can’t help feeling that your dramatic and conceptual silhouettes work almost as a shield of resilience in the accelerated world of global mega brands. How would you describe your approach to fashion? And what would you say you’re trying to express?

Elena: For me, the words local authentic brands and mega brands have two different meanings. I think you can find more love and truth in the small local brands for the simple fact that you can ensure the authenticity of every single piece and you can be in contact directly with the designer in case you need more information about the clothes you are wearing. To run a small independent label it’s like creating your own world where you can make people happier and you can bring them some additional strength through clothes.

Francesca: Le tue costruzioni sono belle, ovviamente, ma tutto è narrativo, scenografico, tutto dà l’idea di una messa in scena. Nelle tue immagini c’è un oggetto e c’è un ritratto e c’è l’esplorazione tra gli spazi “di mezzo”. Potremmo parlare di spazi aperti all’ interpretazione?

Elena: È un mix davvero interessante. Ci sono rimandi alle fiabe russe, come quella di Vasilisa Prekrasnaya “Vasilisa the Beautiful” o quella di Baba Yaga (creatura leggendaria della mitologia russa ndr), alle illustrazioni di Ivan Bilibin, al libro di Clarissa Pinkola Estés “Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetipo”, alle tradizioni russe e ispirazioni che provengono da diversi altri artisti classici e moderni. In verità, credo che ognuno interpreterà queste immagini a suo modo.

Francesca: Your constructions are beautiful, of course, but everything is narrative, scenographic, everything has an idea of a mise-en-scène. In your images there’s an object and there’s a portrait and there’s the exploration in-between spaces. We might say there seems to be something else open to interpretation.

Elena: It’s really an interesting mix.  You can find Russian fairy tales – such as “Vasilisa the Beautiful” by Vasilisa Prekrasnaya or Baba Yaga (author’s note: legendary creature of Russian mythology) – combined with illustrations by Ivan Bilibin, with the book “Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés and with Russian traditions. Different sources of inspiration from classic and modern artists. Indeed, I guess everyone will find his/her own story.

Francesca: Prossimi progetti? Cosa hai in mente per lo sviluppo del brand?

Elena: Attualmente sto lavorando alla mia seconda collezione. Una parte importante del processo creativo è quando stai finalizzando la storia e il mood della nuova collezione e vai in cerca dei tessuti e elabori gli schizzi. A volte sembra di essere lontanissimi dal risultato finale pur avendo la percezione di come sarà. Sto anche lavorando come stylist perché cerco di far fruttare tutta la mia esperienza in ogni cosa che faccio. La sensazione è quella di aver vissuto molte vite e di poter scegliere quella nella quale, all’occorrenza, ci si può immedesimare di più.

Francesca: Do you have any upcoming projects? What steps will you take in order to develop your brand?

Elena: I’m currently working on my second collection. An important part of the creative process is when you are about to define the story and the mood of the new collection, searching for fabrics and doing sketches. Sometimes it seems like you are miles away from the result even if you feel how it will look like at the end. I’m also working as a stylist. I might say I’m using the quintessence of my experience in everything I do, it’s like you’ve lived many lives and you can choose the closest one you can relate to.
